Grand Ambitions — Francesco Laparelli’s Vision Returns to Valletta
18 June – 18 July 2025 | Caravaggio Wing at St John’s Co-Cathedral
Grand Ambitions is a landmark exhibition that brings to life the original architectural vision behind Malta’s capital city.
At its core, Grand Ambitions honours Francesco Laparelli da Cortona, the Italian architect commissioned by the Order of St John to design Valletta following the Great Siege of 1565. His pioneering urban plan laid the groundwork for a fortified capital that merged strategic strength with Renaissance ideals of order, beauty, and function.
Visitors to the exhibition have the rare opportunity to view four original architectural designs of Valletta along with an early drawing of the island of Malta. These priceless documents are on loan from the Accademia Etrusca di Cortona, and their display in Malta marks a significant cultural moment – a homecoming of sorts for the ideas that shaped Valletta.
“This exhibition is more than a tribute to Francesco Laparelli,” says Profs. Mons Emmanuel Agius, President of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation. “It’s a celebration of the enduring legacy of intelligent design, civic responsibility, and the power of imagination rooted in intellectual discipline. Laparelli’s collaboration with the Knights of St John and his deep understanding of the art and science of urban design single him out as not just an architect of stone and bastion, but as an architect of destiny.”
Laparelli’s vision for Valletta was later executed and extended by Girolamo Cassar. He went on to design many of the city’s key buildings, including palaces, auberges, and the Conventual Church of St John, today’s Co-Cathedral.
“As you examine the four priceless architectural designs of Valletta, together with a drawing of the island of Malta which are on display,” Mons. Agius continues, “I recommend that you also reflect on the ambition, courage and clarity that defines Laparelli’s vision. Let us remember that behind every great city lies not only its history, but also the visionaries who dared to look ahead beyond their time.”
This exhibition is an invitation to consider the values that define great cities: vision, resilience, and harmony between spiritual and civic life. Visitors will gain insight into how Valletta was planned not only as a defensive stronghold but as a thriving, living city designed to endure through centuries.
The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Honourable Mayor of Cortona, Luciano Meoni, for granting the temporary transfer of Laparelli’s drawings to Malta. His support has enabled this exceptional opportunity for locals and visitors alike to connect with Valletta’s foundational moment. This project is made possible by St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, Visit Malta, Comune di Cortona, Accademia Entrusca di Cortona, Biblioteca del Comune di Cortona e dell’Accademia Etrusca, and the Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona.
