St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation Announces New President

The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of Mgr. Prof. Emmanuel Agius as its new President, effective as of 31st July 2024. This will be the third time for Mgr. Prof. Agius to be serving as President of the Foundation.

His Grace the Archbishop, Mgr. Charles J. Scicluna, appointed Mgr. Prof. Agius as a member of the Metropolitan Cathedral Chapter on 25th January 2018, and as a member of The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation on 1st August 2019. While consequently in 2020, 2022 and 2024 as President of the Foundation.

In accepting his new role, Mgr. Prof. Agius stated, “I am pleased that H.G. The Archbishop appointed me once again President of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation. I thank him for his trust in me. We have a year of exciting projects and innovative initiatives ahead of us! I am looking forward to continue to consolidate the co-cathedral as a sacred space of worship and to showcase our nation’s prime cultural and religious monument and its artefacts on the international landscape.”

Mgr. Prof. Agius, a former Dean of the F acuity of Theology at the University of Malta, holds an undergraduate (S.Th.B.) and postgraduate (S.Th.L.) degrees in philosophy and theology from the University of Malta, and an M.A. in Philosophy as well as a Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.Th.D) from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He currently serves as a professor of Moral Theology and Philosophical Ethics at the University of Malta.

His academic background includes post-doctoral research in bioethics at the University of Ti..ibingen, Germany, supported by an Alexander-von-Humboldt Stiftung fellowship; at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., as a Fulbright scholar; and at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, U.S.A., under a Theodore Hesburgh scholarship.

Mgr. Prof. Agius has served as the Head of the Department of Moral Theology at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta. Since 2005, he has been a member of the European Group of Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE), an advisory group to the European Commission, and a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life. He is also the moderator of the Commission on Ethics of the European Bishops’ Commission at the European Union (COMECE).

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the CEO and working alongside the CPO, COO & CRO you will be responsible for leading the Marketing team. Your main objective will be to develop and implement effective marketing strategies, handle public relations, manage events and to maximise revenue and achieve organisational objectives. Qualifications and requirements

A bachelor’s degree in marketing (MQF level 6) or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.
A minimum of 3 years work experience in a related position.
Ability to give full attention to what the customers and the front-line personnel say and seek solutions based on formal research, as well as, the feedback of the users and providers of the service.
Needs to have a well-developed battery of interpersonal skills in order to be able to direct, guide and network with others both inside and outside the organisation.

WATCH: Malta Conference on European Cathedrals 2023

On Thursday 11^th and Friday 12^th May 2023 the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation held the second European Cathedrals Conference, at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta. The focus of this year’s conference “The Equilibrium between Conservation and Spirituality”, is an important theme that highlighted the need to strike a balance between preserving the historical and cultural significance of cathedrals and their artefacts whilst simultaneously ensuring that their spiritual significance remains relevant to contemporary society. In 2021, a similar conference on European Cathedrals focused on the good practices and experience in the preservation of works of art through environmental control by microclimatic techniques.

With keynote speakers from Malta, Italy, Germany, Poland, France, Austria, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Spain, this conference offered ample opportunities for attendees to share their insights, knowledge, and experience on how to merge the values of the religious community with those of the conservation world. This conference brought together a diverse group of researchers, students, and experts in the field of conservation, science, and architecture from across Europe and provideda space for networking and dynamic discussions.

Construction underway on St John’s Co-Cathedral Museum

Passers-by in Merchants Street will notice that a tower crane has been erected on the site where the Tapestry Chamber is going to be constructed, together with the spiral staircase and a piston lift that is unique to Malta. Although not much was visible to the public, a large amount of work and intense preparations were being carried out. The Foundation’s consultants AP Valletta and EM Architects are working together to complete this project.

Firstly, geological tests were carried out to ensure the foundations on which the Tapestry Chamber will be built were adequate. To ensure that this will be up to the current standards, the ground will be strengthened with a wall consisting of concrete columns driven into the ground in specific areas. Naturally, many more studies and structural engineering input was necessary. In all, 170 concrete columns will be placed into the foundations that will protect the historical rubble fills that was once a burial ground. Extensive research and investigations were conducted to ensure that no historical material was lost. For the past two years, excavation, all done by hand, was carried out by a group of archaeologists under the supervision of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH) who have been providing guidance to integrate and protect any findings.

The project of restoring and constructing new areas entails interventions in one of Malta’s most historically important monuments. Continuous discussions are held with the Planning Authority, Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, Valletta Local Council, Transport Malta, and the shop owners’ association in Valletta. Thus, all the decisions taken, and adjustments made to the existing fabric are carried out with utmost care and based on in-depth research and investigations, to ensure sound knowledge of the site. Any changes to the original permit are subject to the approval of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, the Planning Authority and UNESCO.

The new foundations and the construction of the tapestry chamber and other restoration works are entrusted to AX Construction Ltd and commenced last April. Significant progress has been recorded to date, with the installation of steel reinforcement for the stabilising columns before applying the concrete cast.

As investigations were being carried out, tenders for works on the area to house the Caravaggio Wing were initiated. The ground floor consists of a hall that will exhibit the painting depicting St Jerome by Caravaggio, and the audio-visual space that will project the story of the artist and his stay on the island, and a hall that will project the famous painting by Caravaggio, The Beheading of St John the Baptist. The works have reached completion and the Wing will be opened shortly. The restoration of the crypt below the oratory and the basement spaces will soon commence. Together with the Caravaggio Wing, the rehabilitation of these areas is part-financed by the European Regional and Development Fund.

The aim of the new museum is to utilise the buildings adjacent to the Co-Cathedral to accommodate the artefacts currently kept in storage. The extension works include the rehabilitation of the existing areas within the basement level, the restoration of the Bartolott Crypt, the construction of a new Tapestry Chamber, the Caravaggio Wing and a new entrance/ exit and ticketing area from Merchants Street that will separate the Museum from the Church.

Feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist | June 23-24

On Wednesday 23rd June, at 18:00, on the occasion of the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, H.G. Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, will celebrate the Solemn Translation of the Relic of St John the Baptist from the Chapel of the Anglo-Bavaria to the Main Altar, followed by the Solemn First Vespers sung from the throne. Later, a Pontifical Mass will be celebrated by the Archbishop.

On Thursday 24th June, at 18:30, the Solemnity of the birth of St John the Baptist, the President of the Foundation of St John’s Co-Cathedral, Prof. Mgr Emmanuel Agius, will celebrate a High Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta.

These celebrations will launch a number of cultural events to mark the 20th Anniversary of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation.

St John the Baptist is the Patron Saint of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Malta.

The public is invited to attend.
