A significant achievement was realised on Friday, 8^th August 2023, as The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation and the St John’s Co-Cathedral Employees’ Union joined hands to formally sign a new collective agreement. This pivotal agreement, endorsed by the dedicated employees, solidifies a comprehensive framework that will shape the working landscape for the years ahead.

This landmark agreement is set to span a duration of four years. The signing ceremony, held in high regard, featured the prominent presence of Mgr Prof. Emmanuel Agius, President of The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, Mr Tonio Mallia, Chief Executive Officer, and Mr Kevin Attard, Chief People Officer. The event also witnessed the participation of Ms Kirby Sciberras, Ms Rosalie Farrugia, and Ms Marika Farrugia, all representing the Employees’ House Union and the workers.

Mgr Prof. Emmanuel Agius emphasised his steadfast belief that the dignity of the Foundation’s employees is intrinsically tied to the recognition and protection of their rights. A fundamental right highlighted in this accord is the just remuneration for their contributions. Over the next four years, this visionary agreement is set to introduce higher increments, embrace family-friendly initiatives, and cultivate an enhanced work environment. The Foundation is committed to refining its structures and amplifying opportunities within the workplace. Mgr Agius underscored the collective agreement as a testament to the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to its workforce, celebrating their dedication to preserving a gem of Baroque art and architecture.

Mr Tonio Mallia, Chief Executive Officer, voiced his sentiments, deeming the day a momentous occasion for all employees associated with the Foundation. Recognising the invaluable contributions each employee makes towards the restoration, conservation, and overall visitor experience of this historical site, he reaffirmed the significance of this agreement in further elevating their efforts.

Mr Kevin Attard, Chief People Officer, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the myriad advantages that this newly inked Collective Agreement will bring to the dedicated workforce. The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation is resolute in its belief that this accord elevates its status as an ‘Employer of Choice’, a testament to its continuous commitment to employee welfare and development.

Ms Rosalie Farrugia, a House Union Representative, conveyed her heartfelt gratitude to the Foundation for spearheading the collective effort together with the management for the accomplishment of the finalisation of this collective agreement. She emphasised that this initiative underscores the Foundation’s commitment to enhancing the conditions and opportunities for every employee.

The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation is a distinguished entity dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the St John’s Co-Cathedral, an exquisite embodiment of Baroque art and architecture located in Valletta. A Memorandum of Understanding detailing a collaboration between The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation and the Jesuits Church Foundation has just been signed, thus signifying an important alliance between the two entities.

 

Among other goals, the Foundation will offer its services of restoration and conservation on three paintings in chapel dedicated to St Lucia and St Agatha, and the painting of Mattia Preti depicting Our Lady with the Saints, St Charles Borromeo and St Francis de Sales of the Jesuit church, funded by the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation. “This will open the Co-Cathedral’s doors to assist other Churches’ restoration and conservation of their paintings and artefacts” stated Prof. Mgr Emmanuel Agius, President of St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundaiton. He continued stating that, “the St John’s Co-Cathedral needs to become a centre of excellence in the restoration and conservation sector, to provide a service to other entities with our technical and scientific experience which we have acquired during the past 22 years since the establishment of The Foundation in 2001”.

Constructed between 1593 and 1609 by the Jesuit Order, the church of the Circumcision of Our Lord is one of the oldest and largest churches in Valletta. It was rebuilt following the Baroque style by Francesco Buonamici after sustaining extensive damage during an explosion in 1634. Nonetheless, after the Jesuits were expelled from Malta in 1768, the church remained in use. A new Foundation was established in July 2021 and to start the conservation which was in dire need.

Fost għanijiet oħra, il-Fondazzjoni se toffri s-servizzi tagħha ta’ restawr u konservazzjoni fuq tliet pitturi fil-kappella ta’ Santa Lucia u Sant’Agata u l-pittura ta’ Mattia Preti li turi l-Madonna mal-Qaddisin Karlu Borromeo u Franġisku de Sales fil-knisja tal-Ġiżwiti, imħallsa kollha mill-Fondazzjoni tal-Konkatidral ta’ San Ġwann. “Dan se jiftaħ il-bibien tal-Konkatidral biex jgħin knejjes oħra fir-restawr u l-konservazzjoni tal-pittura u artifatti,” stqarr il-Prof. Mons. Emmanuel Agius, il-President tal-Fondazzjoni tal-Konkatidral. Huwa qal ukoll “il-Konkatidral ta’ San Ġwann irid isir ċentru t’eċċellenza fl-dawn fl-oqsma tar-restawr u l-konservazzjoni biex b’hekk ikun ta’ servizz għal entitajiet oħra fl-esperjenza teknika u xjentifika li kisbet matul dawn l-aħħar 22 sena mindu twaqqfet il-Fondazzjoni fl-2001”.

Bejn l-1593 u l-1609 il-Knisja taċ-Ċirkonċiżjoni tal-Mulej inbniet mill-ordni tal-Ġiżwiti, u  hija waħda mill-eqdem u l-akbar knejjes fil-Belt Valletta. Il-knisja reġgħet inbniet mill-ġdid fl-istil Barokk minn Francesco Buonamici wara li fl-1634 sofriet ħsarat estensivi kawża splużjoni. Il-knisja baqgħet tintuża wara li l-Ġiżwiti tkeċċew minn Malta fl-1768. F’Lulju 2021 twaqqfet fondazzjoni ġdida biex tibda l-konservazzjoni li kienet fi bżonn kbir.
